After the Los Gallardos fire in Almería killed at least twelve people in July 2026, most of them foreign residents, a question started circulating in every expat WhatsApp group on the Costa: if the instruction is to stay inside, can my house actually take it?
The honest answer is better than most people fear and more conditional than they hope. This guide walks through what decides it, with the evidence. It is general information, current as of July 2026, not engineering or legal advice, and nothing here overrides an instruction from emergency services: if 112 or the authorities tell you to evacuate or to stay, that instruction wins.
Your walls are not the problem
Spanish houses, old fincas and new villas alike, are built from concrete block, brick, and stone under terracotta roofs. Masonry does not burn. This is a genuine, structural advantage over the timber-frame houses that burn by the thousand in California and Australia, and it is part of why Spanish emergency doctrine treats a prepared building as a refuge: in the words of Spanish civil-protection guidance, a prepared dwelling can offer more protection than an exposed road.
But research on roughly 40,000 fire-exposed buildings found that survival is decided less by the primary structure than by the details: windows, eaves, vents, and what is attached to or planted against the house. A masonry villa with single-pane glass, an open attic vent, a wooden pergola on the wall and a butano bottle by the kitchen door can still be lost. The walls buy you the chance; the openings and the perimeter decide whether you keep it.
How houses actually ignite
Fire research identifies three pathways, and the order surprises people.
- Embers. The dominant killer of houses. Burning fragments travel far ahead of the fire front and enter through vents, gaps, and eave openings, or ignite combustible material lying against the building.
- Radiant heat. Burning vegetation near the house can crack and fail single-pane windows before the wall itself is ever touched, opening the envelope to flames.
- Direct flame. Only reaches the house if something continuous carries it there, usually vegetation or an attached wooden structure.
Every item on the checklist below exists to cut one of those three pathways.
The checklist
- The 15-metre strip is the law; 30 metres is the practice. Under Andalucía’s fire-prevention regulation (Decreto 247/2001, Article 24), dwellings, buildings and urbanizaciones in or near forest land must keep a faja de seguridad (safety strip) of at least 15 metres free of residue, scrub, and dry herbaceous vegetation. Spanish fire-service guidance goes further: in the first 30 metres around a dwelling there should be almost no vegetation. Research backs the near zone as the one that matters: clearing within 5 to 20 metres of the structure does most of the work, and beyond about 30 metres additional clearing adds little.
- Nothing green touching the walls. Vegetation in contact with the house is one of the strongest predictors of loss, in some studies stronger than the building’s own characteristics. This includes the decorative jasmine on the pergola and the hedge planted tight against the fence line.
- The cypress hedge deserves a specific look. A maintained cypress tree is surprisingly fire-resistant. The same species grown as a dense, unmaintained hedge accumulates dead litter inside its crown and becomes highly flammable. If a cypress hedge runs along your wall, the question is not the species, it is the dead material inside it and the distance to the house.
- Move the butano. Gas bottles stored against the façade become blowtorches under fire exposure: the safety valve vents gas that ignites in a jet. Store them in a ventilated enclosure away from the walls, and tell whoever does your garden the same about fuel cans.
- Firewood, pergolas, and decking are fuses. A woodpile against the house, a timber pergola, composite decking: each is a place an ember shower can take hold within arm’s reach of your envelope. Distance is the fix for what can move; awareness for what cannot.
- Close the persianas. Spanish confinement guidance says close doors and windows, lower the blinds, and seal smoke entry points. Your aluminium persianas (roller shutters) also stand between radiant heat and your most fragile component, the glass.
- Check your vents. Attic and eave vents are classic ember entry points. Fine metal mesh over them is one of the cheapest defensibility upgrades a masonry house can get.
- Count your exits before you need them. If your urbanización has one narrow access road through pine, that road is the most dangerous place you can be once a fire is running. This is not theoretical: at Pedrógão Grande in Portugal in 2017, 47 people died on a single road while trying to flee in their cars, and at Los Gallardos, officials reported deaths among people fleeing on foot and through a dry riverbed. Late flight kills more people than sheltering does. Leaving very early or staying put in a prepared building are both defensible; leaving late is what the record punishes.
The pool is a resource, not a plan
Research finds houses near water bodies fare somewhat better, and your pool is a water source firefighters can draw on. What the evidence does not support is the fantasy of defending your home with a garden hose while a fire front passes. Preparation is what you do in May; in the moment, you follow instructions.
What your comunidad owes you
If your urbanización sits in or within 400 metres of forest land, it is legally required to have a plan de autoprotección (self-protection plan): a cleared perimeter strip, unbuilt plots kept free of dry vegetation, access passable for fire engines, hydrants, and defined evacuation and confinement procedures. In practice, these plans are widely missing or unmaintained. Worth asking your administrador de fincas (community administrator) four questions at the next meeting: does our plan exist and can I see it; is the perimeter strip actually cleared; who clears the abandoned plot on the corner; and what is our defined muster point. The law is on your side in that conversation.
The insurance surprise
Most residents assume wildfire damage is handled by the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros (the state insurance compensation pool) the way floods are. It is not. The Consorcio does not classify forest fires as an extraordinary risk; its only wildfire role is compensating people injured while taking part in extinction work. Damage to your home from a wildfire is paid by the ordinary fire cover in your standard home insurance policy, which also means: if you are uninsured, there is no state backstop behind you. A five-minute check that your policy’s fire cover and rebuild value are current is part of fire preparation.
